The following organisations and individuals have been recognised by the British International Freight Association as the ‘best in industry’ for each category in the Freight Service Awards 2009. The awards are a true measure of performance quality within the logistics and supply chain industry.

Air Freight Award
The Air Freight category is open to companies providing air freight services.

Winner: Activair (UK)
In their submission, publishing sector specialists Activair UK described how they delivered a large volume of books, simultaneously, into over 50 locations globally for a very high profile customer. This involved converting enormous loads of sea freight, to a premium air freight product, without even one shortage, or incident of damage.

The judges were most impressed with Activair UK’s excellent project management skills in this prestigious and time critical project. It was their excellent communication, co-ordination, and attention to detail throughout the whole process which contributed into making this a great air freight success story.

European Logistics Award
The European Logistics category is open to companies providing road, rail and short sea services.

Winner: GEFCO UK Ltd
Following a study to examine service levels provided in the 2 Wheeler motorcycle industry, GEFCO UK, found a gap in the market between cost control consolidation and enhanced customer care. This enabled them to put forward an innovative and unique logistics proposition to both existing and future clients in this sector.

The judging panel was struck by GEFCO UK’s ambitious plans to expand their ‘2Wheeler development project’ into a large number of new European markets. Their niche logistics solution has been optimised to offer customers a highly effective and personalised service, together with a shared user operation that delivers both competitiveness and significant cost efficiencies.

Ocean Freight Award
The Ocean Freight category is open to companies, including NVOCs, providing ocean freight services and multi-modal transport operations.

The rapid business growth experienced by Eagle Cargo Services was demonstrated by their case study describing the effective management of their important soft furnishing customer’s international supply chain. Project Forwarding Award
The Project Forwarding category is open to providers of project forwarding services or companies who have developed a special project in order to meet the requirements of the customer.

The recently-formed Panprojects division of Panalpina World Transport is proving itself through its successful handling of some mega projects involving huge business risks and enormous technical challenges. Their submission centres on an ongoing project in Kazakhstan requiring vast numbers of skilled staff, as well as massive investments in facilities and equipment.

Panalpina World Transport deserve this award for their truly impressive performance on a project of a massive scale, undertaken in a remote area with challenging infrastructure. Besides immense investment, it required the careful and efficient management and coordination of every single movement involved in the project.

Special Services Award
The Special Services category is open to providers of services, which are not modal specific, including: customs brokerage, warehousing, transit shed operation, packing, technology services, air/shipping line sales agency, and express/courier services.

Woodland International Transport Co. responded positively to the new opportunity of providing logistics services to the magazine industry with a view to developing their existing export book market. Following the opening of a new facility, and the integration of a unique IT system, the result was win-win for all parties concerned.

As a newcomer to the magazine sector, Woodland International Transport Co. demonstrated an innovative approach with their IT solutions and market-leading software. The success of the Media Logistics Team benefitted from the total commitment of company staff at all levels to ensure the success of the new division.

Staff Development Award
The Staff Development category is open to companies who are developing, or have implemented, a new comprehensive staff development programme.

Gist evidenced their passion for training people, by signing the government’s Skills Pledge. The structured training programme Gist offers, delivered through ‘Gist People Services’, includes management trainee schemes, ‘People Panels’, succession planning, as well as National Vocational, and Skills for Life, Qualifications.

The judging panel were particularly impressed by Gist signing the government’s Skills Pledge in January 2009, and by their introduction of ‘People Panels’ for every support function of the business. The ‘panels’, designed to assess individual levels of skill and capability, help to create a certainty about everyone’s purpose and their contribution to the business.

Supply Chain Management Award
The Supply Chain Management category is open to companies who have provided a customer-focused innovative solution enabling a more efficient and cost-effective management of the supply chain.

Winner: Allport
In their submission, Allport described the development of their own business process re-engineering methodology - SMART. This innovative holistic approach has enabled the exploitation of supply chain networks, resulting in a much more efficient flow of product, right through from sourcing to its final destination.

Allport were the deserved winner, amongst a very high level of submissions this year, as they demonstrated a highly detailed understanding of the supply chain process and the underlying business that it supports. This has enabled their client to streamline their operation for greater efficiency, whilst achieving substantial reductions in operating costs.

Young Freight Forwarder Award
The Young Freight Forwarder category is open to individuals, under the age of 30, with a minimum of two years’ employment in the freight industry.

World Transport Agency Ltd
At just 24 Samantha’s proud claim is to be the youngest Manager in the history of World Transport Agency. She has developed from an export clerk to a multi-modal freight forwarder delivering excellent customer service and exceeding targets. She is now working with a major client tracking the carbon footprint of freight.

Samantha impressed the judges with her all round knowledge of freight forwarding and determination to succeed. She has actively sought additional responsibility throughout her career and recognises opportunities to impress her employers and customers. As a Team Manager with World Transport Agency she is keen to pass her knowledge and ethos to those around her.
