Winners 2011
The following organisations and individuals have been recognised by the British International Freight Association as the ‘best in industry’ for each category in the Freight Service Awards 2011. Trophies were awarded to the winners at the luncheon ceremony held on 19th January 2012 at The Brewery, London EC1.

Environment Award
The Environment category is open to companies wishing to present a specific ‘green’ initiative or case study which shows consideration for the environment, or demonstrates a reduction in carbon footprint.

Winner: Yusen Logistics (UK)
Yusen Logistics (UK) gave evidence of their ongoing efforts to conserve the global environment by showcasing the breadth and depth of their environmental initiatives throughout the company. These range from major Group investments, to grass-roots initiatives at local level, as well as massive efficiencies achieved by “thinking outside the box” operationally.

Yusen Logistics (UK) has won this award in recognition of their commitment towards environmental protection at all levels of the organisation. Their policies have been devised with long-term sustainability in mind, and their range of environmental projects is clear evidence of their investment in environmental technology, and in the reduction of emissions and waste.

Project Forwarding Award
The Project Forwarding category is open to providers of project forwarding services or companies who have developed a special project in order to meet the requirements of the customer.

Winner: Asco Freight Management
Asco Freight Management were called upon, following the tragic BP oil disaster in the US Gulf, to provide 24/7 global project support to manage over 100 aircraft and vessel charters in a 90 day period. Their urgent response and meticulous planning played a critical part in the recovery of this tragic environmental catastrophe.

The judges were very impressed with Asco Freight Management’s response to a global disaster. Their commitment was commendable, and the dedication and sacrifice of the personnel involved went well beyond expected service levels. Having proven their expertise on an incident of this scale, the company has acquired a new specialist service to offer customers.

Special Services Award
The Special Services category is open to providers of services, which are not modal specific, including: customs brokerage, warehousing, transit shed operation, packing, technology services, air/shipping line sales agency, and express/courier services.

Winner: Aramex
Aramex put forward a submission which displayed their astute commercial awareness by tapping into the increasing demand for internet-based business from the retail sector. Together with their existing e-commerce product, ‘Shop & Ship’, 'e-Shop World' is set to revolutionise the international shopping experience for millions.

The judging panel was particularly impressed by Aramex’s entry which described an innovative and straight-forward solution to the problem of purchasing goods online from international suppliers. The solution provides the consumer with complete delivered costs, including taxes and duty, thus giving value-added service to the customer, whilst adding to the company’s own traffic and revenue streams.

Staff Development Award
The Staff Development category is open to companies who are developing, or have implemented, a new comprehensive staff development programme.

Schenker considers its employees as key in its mission ‘to be a customer focused company through the empowerment and development of its people’. The organisation has clearly invested much effort and money to extend its training programmes, resulting in a highly engaged, motivated and skilled workforce.

Schenker showed dedication to staff development throughout the company, demonstrating particular innovation in their apprenticeship programme. The company’s inclusive and holistic approach in creating and implementing its Learning and Development Programme was key to earning them this award.

Supply Chain Management Award
The Supply Chain Management category is open to companies who have provided a customer-focused innovative solution enabling a more efficient and cost-effective management of the supply chain.

Winner: SBS Worldwide
SBS Worldwide described how, jointly with its consultancy, it revolutionised the consolidation of printing for a medical publishing client of theirs. The newly-created supply chain now allows the publisher to consolidate the printing of millions of books per year in Asia, whilst having massively reduced the logistics costs in year one of operation.

SBS Worldwide is the deserved winner of this category for illustrating an excellent example of a true vendor relationship. Their tailored real-time web solution not only provided end-to end-visibility, via multiple media, but also incorporated their customer’s key performance indicators, in addition to demonstrating tangible benefits in cost, transit time and flexibility.

Air Freight Award
The Air Freight category is open to companies providing air freight, or sea/air, services.

Winner: Woodland Group
Last year proved to be a breakthrough year for the Woodland Group. Following a four year dynamic management plan, including the rebranding and transformation of their air freight profile, they successfully tripled their volumes, with a host of new clients. Their air freight product has now been brought in line with their existing mainstream ocean and road businesses.

The Woodland Group evidenced a success story to be proud of in a challenging economic environment. Their ‘Barriers to Success’ strategy had a clear direction and was implemented effectively. The company’s use of existing relationships, their sound purchasing, and their implementation of commercial management were three of the key aspects that particularly impressed the judges.

European Logistics Award
The European Logistics category is open to companies providing road, rail and short sea services.

The Uniserve Group tackled the challenging European logistics requirements of their major electronics manufacturing client, to the latter’s complete satisfaction. By designating their own UK operations as the European hub for their Asian-manufactured products, they allowed their client to capitalise on Eastern Europe as a new region for major business expansion.

By fully understanding their client’s problems, goals and objectives, the Uniserve Group were able to build and implement a modern and flexible logistics solution that delivered significant cost-savings and increased performance. This lead to both the company and its client seeing improvements across performance and sales in a challenging global economic environment.

Ocean Freight Award
The Ocean Freight category is open to companies, including NVOCs, providing ocean freight services and multi-modal transport operations.

By carrying out a recent service review, Ideal International identified some key areas in which they could improve their ocean freight services. In their submission they gave evidence of how they have cemented their long-term relations with two key customers by consistently delivering practical and problem-free solutions giving them the much-valued ‘Comfort Factor’.

The achievements that Ideal International described in their submission showed consistent improvements. The benefits for their customers are not only proactive but also demonstrate significant ‘added value’, whilst the measurable internal benefits for the company itself are providing a repeatable business process template for the future.

Young Freight Forwarder Award
The Young Freight Forwarder category is open to individuals working for a BIFA Member company who are under the age of 30, with a minimum of two years’ employment in the freight industry.

Radius Logistics UK
Izabela arrived in the UK six years ago to study. A work-based project was her first experience in international forwarding which then led to full-time employment covering both air and sea freight. In August 2010 she decided the time was right to set up her own company and Radius Logistics was born.

The judges were impressed with Izabela’s personal drive and commitment to the freight forwarding industry. She considers the freight forwarders' role to be vital in the supply chain and gives full attention to understanding and meeting her customers’ needs. Her plans for the future include expansion overseas with a dedicated office in New York.
